Cautionary Tales For Children
Wonderful witty poems great for reading to your children. The stories and rhymes will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Research has shown how important YOU are to your children and how as a dad the things you do, and keep on doing, really count, whether you live with them, or you are a single dad and are only able see them once a month, once a week or more, what you do really matters. This site is dedicated to all dads but will be of special relevance to the single dad. Remember, you are half the reason your children exist and they need you whether you live with them or not. As their dad, you have what it takes to make their lives successful and fulfilling no matter how often you see them. This site is about all the positive things that we as parents have to offer our children.

All 54 playing cards (52 cards and 2 Jokers) neatly on one sheet of paper!
MicroCards - Printable Playing Cards - Standard Set
These dadcando MicroCards are printable playing cards, and are just the thing for quick, stealthy games of snap, blackjack or which ever card game takes your fancy. With just 18 careful slices with a craft knife or scalpel, or just nice and steady scissors, a whole pack of playing cards will be created from a sheet of paper.

With only the imagination as the limit why stop at the same old hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades? Why not the ‘two of millipedes’ or the ‘seven of apples?’. We are just bubbling with more design ideas and will be creating more packs soon, but what can you think of that fits the pack design criteria?* Send your ideas through and maybe we will put your pack together with your name on the download!

Here’s some tips for printing out and cutting your cards:
  • When printing set you printer to the highest quality – the text and pictures are going to be quite small!
  • If you can, print the cards on photo paper which is quite thick. These will make the print look better, make the cards last longer – and also stop people being able to see through the back of the card!
  • If you have a printer that can print borderless images your cards will be bigger, but cutting them out will take more time.
  • When printing the PDF make sure the image fills the whole page (check ‘fit to page’ options). If you have an A3 or large printer then you can create even bigger cards.
  • When cutting, cut all the inner lines first and do not cut right through, edge to edge. If you cut the outer cards off first you will likely cut off the darker cutting marks at the very edges. Cutting inside lines first also helps keep the sheet together when cutting.
  • When cutting with a knife TAKE GREAT CARE - CRAFT KNIVES ARE VERY SHARP!. Check fingers are clear of the path of the blade BEFORE you cut.
  • Hold the ruler or guide down firmly at all times, the paper will be more likely to try and move under the pressure of the knife as more cuts are made - especially if you are using glossy photo paper which is slippery.
  • Why not store your cards in a match box – they are just the right size! And if you want to, why not print out a nice cover for your match box and upload your design?

*Make up your own pack theme!
You will need two red objects, two black objects and a jack, queen, king and a joker – and all must be linked by a common theme. For instance, how about birds? There’s a robin red breast and a redwing. Ravens are well known for being black, and there’s the blackbird as well. We have a Jackdaw, Queen Alexander or Princess Parrot, a Kingfisher and for the Joker .. well, can you think of any that would fit the bill (pun well and truly intended!)?

Playing games is a very important part of being a child. Through game playing children learn about strategy, the joy of winning, how to cope with losing, negotiation techniques and how to notice and understand a whole range of social cues, all of which will significantly improve the way they get along with people as they grow up. Playing games also develops the imagination. When kids play a game together they build a whole story round their game, each person has a character, a purpose and motives, all playing out their parts in the rich landscape of their imaginations.

research has shown that degree and quality of playtime a child has with its father is a vital factor in determining the growing child’s sense of self-worth and confidence

Almost anything you do with your kids can and should be partly game (think of Mary Poppins finding fun in every chore), but it is important to set time aside for your kids when you are just playing with them for the sake of playing, rather than instructing them or caring for them. When you play together you enter their world and understand so much more about them and how they think, and you give them your undivided attention, some of the highest quality time your child can get. Scientific research studies have repeatedly shown that the degree and quality of playtime a child has with its father is a vital factor in determining the growing child’s sense of self-worth and confidence.

Having your children's friends round for tea

You don’t need to wait for a special occasion party to organise some games or activities. Having friends over for tea or the afternoon at the weekend is an important part of your children’s social life. They won’t need much encouragement to invite their friends over to your house. They’ll be proud to show off their other home and proud to show off their dad and the fun things that you do together. At times like these it is good to have a few games or Doing Activities ready to go, instead of letting them play on the games console all afternoon. You could plan to do one of the dadcando.com Making projects, (there are some that only need a piece of paper) or you could try out one of the party games in this section as an activity. You’ll find some great games in the Children’s Parties page like the Egyptian Mummy game or the Treasure Hunt, either of which are perfect for when your kid has his or her friends over for tea.

Or maybe it's just time to put your feet up and relax together

When you’re all done and you all just want to put your feet up and cuddle up on the sofa, then watching a great film with your kids or reading a lovely story to them is a wonderful way to spend time together. We hope you'll find find our weekly review of films and books useful in finding a good film or book to curl up with.
