Research has shown how important YOU are to your children and how as a dad the things you do, and keep on doing, really count, whether you live with them, or you are a single dad and are only able see them once a month, once a week or more, what you do really matters. This site is dedicated to all dads but will be of special relevance to the single dad. Remember, you are half the reason your children exist and they need you whether you live with them or not. As their dad, you have what it takes to make their lives successful and fulfilling no matter how often you see them. This site is about all the positive things that we as parents have to offer our children.

Mini USB Coca-Cola Tiffany Lamp

Make this fabulous miniature USB Tiffany lamp from a table tennis ball, some loose change and an old paint brush ferule

Tiffany Lamps are those beautiful coloured glass lamps originally made by Louis Comfort Tiffany, at the beginning of the 20th, Century one of the most famous stained glass artists of the United States. Originally Tiffany had trained as an interior designer and in the 1870s he opened his own studio and glass foundry because he was having trouble finding the type and colour of glass that he needed for his projects. He quickly became famous for his beautiful stained glass windows, and with the advent of Thomas Edison’s electric light bulb, decided to put the scraps of glass left over from his windows to good use by making exotic lampshades out of them. . . .
Even today, original Tiffany lamps or one of the many millions of modern reproductions look beautiful in the home as they timelessly capture the essence of creativity and freedom of expression that was growing amongst designers as the Arts and Crafts Movement turned in to Art Nouveau at the end of the 19th Century. . . .
A Tiffany lamp is normally made by taking pieces of stained glass and soldering them together with copper foil, or very thin lead cames, just like miniature leaded light, stained glass windows. Original Tiffany lamps command huge prices at auction, The record price for an original Tiffany Studios lamp at a public sale exceeds US$8,000,000. Now you can make one for yourself from some old junk for more or less nothing. It’s easy too, there is a tiny bit of soldering (to make the USB plug), the base is just made from three coins and the metal end of an old artist’s paintbrush makes the lamp stem. . . .
The shade is simply made from an old table tennis ball cut round with a wavy edge. You can paint any Art Nouveau pattern on the table tennis ball (or even use any clear bottle cap painted up), but we have used a design just like one of the original Coca-Cola Tiffany lampshades. It’s so easy and all you need are some coloured permanent markers (red, yellow and green) and a black marker or embossing pen for outlining the pattern. It glows beautifully with the super bright LED, easily hacked from a very cheap mini USB PC light. . . .
Of course you don't have to make a round lampshade. once you have made the simple but elegant base and stem, you can make any miniature lampshade you like from almost anything, paper, tracing (onion) paper, OHP film, or tissue. Then again, why not make a Chinese lantern from thin strips of bamboo and some tissue, just like the real thing only tiny, and then use the base from this project to hang that shade on. . . .
USB mini PC light This is what I used for the Electronic parts. The very cheap mini USB LED light is just perfect as a starting point for making your USB Coca-Cola Tiffany Lamp. It has the LED you'll need (with correct resistor), a short length of wire and the USB plug, in fact everything that you will need to make the light work properly, I don't think that you can buy the individual components any cheaper.
The instructions are so easy to follow, and the download comes complete with some handy template graphic guide printables that will help you get the logo looking perfect at the right size. The downloadable comes in both US Letter size and A4, just click on the size you need, to download it.
