Cautionary Tales For Children
Wonderful witty poems great for reading to your children. The stories and rhymes will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Research has shown how important YOU are to your children and how as a dad the things you do, and keep on doing, really count, whether you live with them, or you are a single dad and are only able see them once a month, once a week or more, what you do really matters. This site is dedicated to all dads but will be of special relevance to the single dad. Remember, you are half the reason your children exist and they need you whether you live with them or not. As their dad, you have what it takes to make their lives successful and fulfilling no matter how often you see them. This site is about all the positive things that we as parents have to offer our children.

The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly

Jean-Dominique Bauby

A beautifully written and profoundly moving book.
. . . One day everything is normal. Life; your work, the daily grind with all its trials and tribulations with all the things you think are so important are clamouring for your attention. . . Then you wake up unable to move a muscle, and none of that matters any more. Thatís what happens if one day you have a sudden, massive and unexpected brain haemorrhage, and after three weeks in a coma, you come to consciousness to find that you are completely paralysed and only able to move your left eyelid. Thatís what happened to Jean-Dominique Bauby, the onetime charismatic editor-in-chief of French Elle magazine.
. . . Normally we would not know what was really going on in the mind of someone trapped in complete paralysis, but through this little book, you have the honour of being able to share and learn from this experience from the comfort of being able bodied. The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly is a testament to the strength of character shown by the author who dictated the book over a year by blinking his eyelid as friends and visitors to his hospital bedside read out an alphabet a letter at a time.
. . . Jean-Dominique Bauby, takes us through a simple and unpretentious voyage of self discovery without ever sinking into self-pity, nor pretending that his condition is one from which he will someday rise in triumph. We take this journey with Bauby, in a book that is impossible to put down and short enough to read in one sitting.
. . . The book touched me deeply and since reading it I have caught myself thinking about exactly how I see the world and what is important to me. In the book, Bauby describes a visit by his son on Fatherís Day, a day that he had not had anytime for before his cerebral event, but now takes on a new and poignant meaning. On this day, his son comes to visit and chats as he pushes Bauby along the hospital corridor in a wheelchair. As the conversation drifts, Bauby wants to make a funny comment to his son, but after a lot of effort all he can manage is a single tear. He later writes, ĎToday we spent the whole of the symbolic day together, affirming that even a rough sketch, a shadow, a tiny fragment of a dad is still a dad.í
. . . If you donít have much time or if you only have time to read one book, make it this one, I guarantee it will be one of the best books you will ever read.
