Broad bean Growing Experiment

How do big fat broad beans get as slim as runner beans?
They grow in a race of course!
Ready, steady, grow.

And they're off... A broad bean is the ideal starting point for a seed growing experiment. Big and full of all the stuff a plant needs to get growing quickly, beans are often used in schools to teach students about germination and what happens when a dormant seed starts to grow into a new plant. This experiment is a neat twist on that time honoured tradition, because by growing the beans down into water in clear tubes (instead of in soil), you can not only watch the progress of the roots as they develop, but you can line up your beans and race them against each other.
. . . To avoid disappointment the beans are pre-soaked, and more beans than you need for the experiment are pre-germinated in a special little incubator. This is a long term project. Once set up in their tubes, the beans will continue to grow for weeks, giving your children something that they can keep coming back to look at, over and over again, to check progress. And because beans grown so quickly, there'll always be a change to see, even if you look at them every day.
. . . To make it even more of a scientific experiment why not selectively add a few drops of plant nutrient to the tubes, or grow different kinds of beans in each tube. For our experiment, I added seven drops of liquid plant feed to one of the tubes, only one drop to another and left the last tube with just plan tap water in it. Do you think it'll make a difference? Well you'll have to wait and see, because we've only just started the experiment, but as the weeks go by, I'll take more photos and post them here, and we'll see if there is any difference. But why not run your own experiment and see if you get the same results.
. . .The ball point pen marks on the tubes in the picture below are for the first and second day's growth. Quick growing indeed, but not quite quick enough for a "beancam".

Growing a plant from seed is a great experimental project because there's something weirdly magic about it, and yet it is really proper science. Talk to your kids about the experiment. I donít believe in dumbing down things for children too much. They are learning machines and hungry for any interesting bits of information. As long as you use words that they understand, youíll find that kids of any age readily grasp new concepts. Discuss the nature of time and its measurement with your kids as you are making the egg timer. But make sure you listen to what they are saying, when they are relaxed and having fun the things they talk about are a good window on how they are thinking and feeling.

This is just a few key interesting facts about the experiment, designed to help you fire up your children's interest, and help you explain simply what's going on in the experiment if they ask.

Broad bean Growing Experiment one week

This is what the beans look like after one week. The bean at the far end had seven drops of "Baby Bio" a leading brand liquid plant food, which was twice the recommended dose. The bean in the middle had only one drop of the liquid feed but was accidentally put into the tube upside down (with respect to the growing shoot) so the leaves are trying to grow down into the water. After this picture was taken, I took out the bean and turned it round. The nearest bean had no drops of liquid feed at all and is growing in plain water.

Why doesnít the water spill out of the other end of the tube?
(Although this question is not related to seed growing, it may be the first thing that occurs to younger experimenters when you fill up the tubes, and is a good principle to learn about.) The weight of all the air in the atmosphere is pressing down on the top of the water with the same force at both ends of the tube, making sure the water stays at the same height at both open ends. Think of the curved tube as a special kind of bucket.

Which bit of the seed grows first?
The root starts to grow first. This anchors the plant in the ground, enables it to start drawing up water and as it lengthens, it lifts the first leaves clear of the ground so that they can start catching the sunlight as soon as possible. The first tip that appears is called the radicle, the main part that then extends is called the hypocotyl.

Where does the plant come from?

A huge oak tree grows from a tiny acorn, so where does all that mass come from? It doesn't come from the soil, that's for sure! Apart from a few nutrients, the roots only bring water into the tree. The tree actually builds itself from air using sunlight as a power source. The solid part of the tree (the bit that isn't water) is made by the tree using a process called photosynthesis, where the tree uses sunlight to unlock the carbon from carbon dioxide gas in the air.

How much does a big tree weigh?
A large, mature beech tree 30m tall, with a trunk diameter of 1m, weighs about 9 tons, 8 tons of which are above ground. The biggest giant red wood trees can weight as much as 2,500 tons. To put this into perspective, a horse weighs about 1 ton, an elephant about 6 tons and an average family home about 100 tons.

Do you remember when you were a kid and you mixed things up to see what would happen? When you're a kid, inquiring is what you do. In the words of Uncle Buckís nephew, "itís my job". Kids really love to experiment and are always on the look out for new information, itís how they learn so much about the world around them.

As their dad, you are the perfect person to dust off the kid in you and get down to some serious fun experimentation

Most of the experiments here will be covered by your children's school at one time or another, so why not give them a head start in class and get them excited about learning. Kids love learning if theyíre interested in something, so set their imagination on fire with a science experiment; I guarantee that they will remember it until they're doing it with kids of their own.
